10 Hyrox mistakes first timers make
Updated 19 October 2026. About 3 minutes to read.
Most first race mistakes are easy to avoid, once someone tells you about them. Here are the 10 we see most, with a fix for each.
1. Starting the first run too fast
You feel fresh and the crowd is loud, so you sprint. Then you pay for it for the rest of the race. Fix: run the first kilometre slower than feels natural. Read our pacing guide.
2. Only running, or only lifting
Hyrox needs both. Runners get stuck at the stations, and gym people get stuck on the runs. Fix: train running, strength and stations every week.
3. Never practising run and station together
A lunge feels very different after a kilometre of running. Fix: once a week, do a run and station combo, like 1 km easy then 500 m on the rower.
4. Saving wall balls for race week
They are the last station and they come when you are most tired. Fix: practise early and often. Read our wall ball guide.
5. Ignoring grip
The sled pull, the farmers carry and the sandbag all hit your grip. Fix: add heavy carries, rows and dead hangs, and plan set-downs so you choose the rest.
6. Skipping station practice because there is no sled
Many gyms have no sled. That is no reason to skip the work. Fix: use swaps. The gym substitute finder shows what works with your kit.
7. Wasting time in the roxzone
The space between the run and each station counts on the clock. Strolling costs seconds that add up. Fix: move through it with purpose. Read about the roxzone.
8. Doing every session hard
Hard days only help if you recover from them. Fix: keep most runs easy, and take rest days seriously. See how to plan your training week.
9. Trying something new on race day
New shoes, new kit or a new gel can ruin your day. Fix: test everything in training. Use the race day checklist.
10. Guessing your goal
A random goal time sets you up to start too fast. Fix: use the race time calculator to see a finish time from your own numbers, then pick a goal that stretches you a little.
Pick the two you recognise
Do not try to fix all 10 at once. Pick the two that sound most like you and fix them this week. Starting too fast and skipping run and station practice are the two we see most.
Questions people ask
What is the biggest first timer mistake?
Starting too fast. Almost everyone does it at least once. Slow down in the first kilometre and you protect the whole race.
How early should I start training?
Give yourself at least 8 weeks if you can already run and lift a little. If you are starting from scratch, build your running base first and give yourself longer.
Do I need a coach?
No. A clear plan that tells you what to do each session, plus honest tracking of your times, gets most first timers to the finish line.
